Screening of "Only Human", Saturday, February 2

Think of it as "Meet the Parents" … in Madrid . When a Jewish girl, Leni, brings home her Palestinian fiancé, Rafi, the result is a series of zany, romantic, and potentially tragic misadventures that fill an eventful night of farce and fun.

"Only Human," which The New York Times described as "a vigorously paced modern screwball comedy," hilariously explores family values and the mismatched cultures of Leni and Rafi at a breakneck pace. It will screen on Saturday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m. at the Temple.

After the screening, Prof. Milton Heumann, chair of the Rutgers Political Science Department from 1997 to 2003, will examine the ways in which the film employs stereotypes of Jews in its humor and its naturalization of Jewish-Palestinian romantic relationships in personal and political terms.

This film screening and talk are open to the public at no charge, with a $5 donation suggested, but not required. Released in 2004, the film is in Spanish with English subtitles. It is rated R for some sexual content and nudity. The final two screenings in this series will be "Close to Home" (Saturday, March 1, 8:00 P.M. ) and "Strange Fruit" (Saturday, April 5, 9:00 P.M. ).
