Children's Programming
HPCT-CAE offers many free or low-cost activities for kids and their families. Make friends at Family Fun Days, holiday craft workshops, bowling and skating outings, baseball games, and theatrical events. In addition, the following programs are geared to every age and taste and help lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning and commitment. For details, e-mail us at info@hpct-cae.org.
Age 1-Kindergarten: Torah Time
On Shabbat mornings, children sing, play games and join in activities related to the weekly Torah portion. Parents are invited to stay. The children read from the Torah and enjoy a snack. On holiday mornings, they learn related traditions and songs.
Torah Time is led by Dr. Marlene Herman, recipient of the Women's League for Conservative Judaism Baalot Mitzvah award for education and the Keter Shem Tov award from New Jersey Region of United Synagogue.
Grades 1-3: Mini-Minyan
Every Shabbat and Holiday morning, children in grades one through three gather in parent-led groups to hear stories, sing songs and discuss the weekly Torah portion.
Grades 4-6: Junior Congregation
Fourth- through sixth-graders discuss how the weekly Torah portion ties in with contemporary issues in their lives. They test their knowledge with trivia contests and games of Jewish Jeopardy.
Graded 6-8 and 9-12: Young Ambassadors
On two Shabbat mornings every month, IDF veterans from Israel’s Mekor Chayim yeshiva meet with 6th through 8th graders and then 9th through 12th graders. Leading discussions and creative activities, these Young Ambassadors model Rabbi Steinsaltz’s philosophy that Judaism is not a compartmentalized part of life, but far-reaching perspective that informs every aspect of how one relates to the world.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Preparation
The congregation at HPCT-CAE includes many non-pulpit rabbis and Jewish scholars. A number of them are available to prepare your child to chant the Torah and Haftarah and to deliver a d’var Torah. Rabbi Malomet will also meet with your child to explore the true meaning of this milestone.
Hebrew High School
Our Hebrew High School program is offered for post-B'nei Mitzvah students in Grades 8 through 10. Classes meet each Sunday morning from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. The goal of the Hebrew High School is to provide an engaging, experiential program that enables learners to develop their own personal sense of Jewish identity and that affirms the ongoing relevance of the tradition in their lives.
